Like you may have guessed from the name of Mitchell's business, he specializes in providing therapy from a mindfulness-based perspective. What this entails is providing therapy that emphasizes aspects of mindfulness and staying grounded in the present moment with compassion for one's self. Mindfulness-based psychotherapy also emphasizes teachings from the past to enlighten the present by understanding and being with your suffering and learning strategies to decrease your suffering.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) was invented by Richard Schwartz and is one of the most talked about therapies in recent memory, even being praised by one of the most widely respected leaders in therapy as it relates to trauma, Bessel Van Der Kolk. IFS recognizes that we all have many different "parts" of ourselves that we sometimes push aside or exile. Parts that may be angry, depressed, self critical, unmotivated, anxious, distracted, or many other examples. But, by accessing these parts and building a relationship with them and understanding them a little bit more, we can have more choice in how we respond in our day to day life.
Brainspotting (BSP) was invented by David Grand in 2003 and is one of the fastest-growing therapies in the world due to its incredible ability to aid in healing from trauma and resolving deep emotional wounds. Some clients that Mitchell has served have remarked that Brainspotting has helped them become "unstuck" after many years of not making progress in traditional talk therapy. The basic principle behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is that our thoughts (cognitive) influences our behavior and feelings (behavioral therapy). By utilizing CBT in session, you'll be able to reframe or change your thoughts and feel more positive and in control than you may have before. Sometimes, it may feel like our thoughts are our own enemy because they make us feel worse than we were already feeling. But, with CBT, you'll have the power to change those thoughts and in turn, feel better.
Carl Rogers, the founder of Humanistic, now called Person-Centered Therapy, said, "When I look at the world I am pessimistic, but when I look at people I am optimistic." I truly believe that people are inherently good, regardless of what has happened to them and what they've been through. When you walk through my door, I hold you in unconditional positive regard and believe that you deserve an empathetic ear.
Most people will experience loss at some point in their lives. Grief is a reaction to any form of loss. Bereavement is a type of grief involving the death of a loved one. If you have lost someone or something precious, therapy counseling may be the optimum alternate for you. Mitchell can help with any sort of loss, whether society validates the grief or not. Therapy is an opportunity to explore your feelings and memories without judgment. No loss is too big or too small to warrant support. You do not have to endure your grief alone.
While anxiety is a normal and sometimes even healthy and beneficial part of human functioning, at times it can become overwhelming. There are many forms that anxiety disorders can take in an unhealthy manner. Without help, you may feel trapped in your home, unable to face certain situations, and unable to complete normal tasks and duties. Mitchell will introduce you to methods and techniques to assist you in overcoming anxiety that help you find piece of mind and provide you relief.
Going through a life transition to adapt to change in your personal or professional life may make you feel uneasy or uncertain about how to approach each day, especially if you’re struggling with overwhelming emotions and stress surrounding new responsibilities. During safe and comfortable life transitions counseling sessions, Mitchell will work with you to assess your current thoughts and emotions, understand why you feel stuck and develop a plan for healing, growth and stability moving forward.
While the above specialties are issues that I work with often, I am also well versed in working with other issues, such as trauma, depression, relationship issues, codependency, chronic stress, LGBTQIA+ issues, spirituality, men's and masculinity issues, and identity issues.
